BASIL

Ocimum basilicum
Labiatae—mint family

Basil oil is extracted by steam distillation of the flowering plant. Basil oil has strong psychological effects—it cheers, strengthens, and acts as an antidepressant. Basil has been used to treat melancholy, fear, sadness, weak nerves, and depression. It is an effective remedy for migraine headaches that arise from liver and gallbladder problems. Basil oil salves and inhalants relieve sinus congestion. The oil helps reduce cramps, flatulence, and nervous hiccups and acts on the suprarenal gland. It stimulates menstruation and must therefore be avoided during pregnancy.

Dosage: Take 2,to 3 drops, diluted, three times daily.
